Following partner Nokia, Intel has now announced it is to abandon the MeeGo platform as well. Instead, it will be working on a new mobile platform with Samsung that’s called Tizen.

Though Nokia is scaling down on both MeeGo and Symbian until it starts shipping the first Windows Phone 7 devices, competitors seem very interested in having MeeGo on their devices.

The MeeGo Project has moved MeeGo Netbook UX into maintenance mode. This means the netbook OS will only receive updates for important bugfixes.

It seems MeeGo is getting support from an unexpected side. Intel’s competitor AMD has announced it will help develop the mobile operating system, probably to help selling its new line of APU’s.

Andreas Jekl explained the OS strategy of Nokia. While many expect Series 40 to be replaced with Symbian, Nokia will remain building S40 devices for the low-end markets.

Nokia and Intel have set loose MeeGo 1.1 for the development community. Nokia does warn consumers not to install it as MeeGo 1.1 is still a work-in-progress operating system.

Distimo has updated its Distimo Monitor to support both BlackBerry World and Nokia’s Ovi Store. Through the Mobile Monitor, developers can check the performance of their apps as well as that of competitors.

Nintendo is not the only vendor planning a mass market autostereoscopic device. As it turns out, MeeGo, the JV of Intel and Nokia, is also planning its move into 3D.
