No More Google Phones

July 6th, 2010 by Arjan Olsder Posted in Platforms: AndroidOS, Smartphones & Tablets | No Comments »

In an interview with the Daily Telegraph, Google CEO Eric Schmidt said that the company has no plans to release more Google branded Android phones on the market.

He explained that initially it was a good idea to help the market and the Android platform forward. Meanwhile, the market also knows the sales of the device where far behind on expectation as the device was also sold on a global level without the Google branding while the Nexus One was only available in the US as the start. Other vendors came with similar hardware soon after the release of the Nexus one.

“The idea a year and a half ago was to do the Nexus One to try to move the phone platform hardware business forward. It clearly did. It was so successful, we didn’t have to do a second one. We would view that as positive but people criticized us heavily for that. I called up the board and said: ‘Ok, it worked. Congratulations – we’re stopping.” Said Eric Schmidt, CEO at Google.
